Spending Spending in Washington is out of control. It’s very disturbing that we are passing this burden onto our kids and grandkids. We must put a lid on spending and end the waste, fraud, and abuse. Did you know the federal government spends $1 Billion every four hours? Here is another way to look at it: If someone spends $1,000 a day, it would take them 2,740 years to spend as much as the federal government spends in one day. This spending increases our national debt by about $1 million every minute. Here are some things I have done to put a lid on federal spending: •In 1997, I helped craft the first balanced budget to pass the House of Representatives since 1969. I consistently cosponsor legislation to cut federal spending and balance the budget again. •I voted for spending reforms so that a Member’s name has to be next to any project for which they request money. This will make Members think twice about requesting money for “pork projects.” •I voted for changing the way Congress does its budget so every American can see where their money is being spent. It’s your money; you should know where it’s going! It’s just common sense! •I voted to create reserve funds, like a rainy day fund, to help cover funding for emergency disasters like Katrina, or the wildfires in California, so we do not add it to our national debt. •I serve on the Republican Study Committee, a group of over 100 fiscal conservatives. We have proposed eliminating 100’s of wasteful government programs that would save taxpayers 10’s of billions of dollars. I previously served as Chair of this group. •I voted against the wasteful $800 million stimulus bill •I voted against Obamacare, which will saddle future generations with unprecedented debt. •I support a budget plan that will slow the growth of entitlement spending on programs like Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security, freezes non-defense discretionary spending over the next 5 years. It would ensure that the national debt doesn't exceed 75% of GDP at any point over the next 75 years. Meanwhile, the President's budget allows the national debt to exceed 100% of GDP by 2030. |
